|JOIN US for an early season cycling
tour as we cycle and explore a number
of locations on Vancouver Island. We
will visit Chemainus, Cowichan Bay,
Shawnigan Lake, Cobble Hill, Lake
Cowichan, Duncan and finally Ganges
on Salt Spring Island during their popular
Saturday Market. For off roaders there
will be an opportunity to cycle from
Shawnigan Lake to Lake Cowichan
on the Trans Canada Trail. Tackling
some hills on this bike tour will provide us with a feeling of accomplishment.
South Vancouver Island Cycling Tour May 1 - 6, 2018
May 1: Our spring tour begins in Chemainus. Participants will drive their own vehicles with bikes or car pool to meet there. At 1:00pm we depart Chemainus for Cowichan Bay via Richard’s Trail which takes us through rural areas. Overnight - Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay - Meals included - none - 30km
May 2: This morning we depart Cowichan Bay and cycle south and continue to Shawnigan Lake for lunch and a possible side trip to see the Kinsol Trestle. Then we will loop back to Cowichan Bay via Cobble Hill. As this tour is as much about sightseeing as cycling we will take our time to look around Shawnigan Lake and Cobble Hill. Then we will return to the quaint seaside town of Cowichan Bay with it’s shops, museums and restaurants. Overnight - Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay - Meals included - none - 32km
May 3: Trans Canada Trail option - Those wanting to cycle the Trans Canada Trail today from Shawnigan Lake to Lake Cowichan will be shuttled to Shawnigan Lake for today’s ride. You will cycle over the Kinsol and other trestle bridges and will experience a more remote trail which is for the most part inaccessible to our support vehicle. The last 10km is quite rocky. Because of rougher trail conditions and possible muddy areas on the Trans Canada Trail we recommend a hybrid bike with shocks for this option. 44km Road option - Other participants will be riding on mostly low traffic roads and the well maintained Cowichan Valley Rail trail enroute to Lake Cowichan where both groups will meet. While there is an elevation gain today it is mostly on the rail trail so it is an easy grade and a nice ride. We should have time to explore the town of Lake Cowichan this afternoon - Overnight - Lake Cowichan Lodge - Meals included - none - 41km
May 4: This morning our whole group will cycle to Duncan via Cowichan Lake Road, a slightly downhill ride. We should arrive midday so will have time to explore everything the City of Duncan has to offer. Overnight - Ramada Inn, Duncan - Meals included - none - 41km
May 5: We will continue our trip of discovery as we leave Duncan headed for Salt Spring Island via the somewhat hilly Osborne Bay Road which goes directly to Crofton. At Crofton we will take the 10am ferry to Salt Spring Island and cycle to Ganges on the lower road. Here we will find the Famous Salt Spring Island Market which happens every Saturday from 9am - 4pm. The Market’s motto is “Make it, Bake it or Grow it”. We will wind up the day with our included farewell dinner. Overnight -Salt Spring Inn and Sea Breeze Inne - Meals included - Farewell Dinner - 25km
May 6: Our last day will take us from Ganges to Vesuvius Bay for the return ferry to Crofton. From Crofton we will cycle north to Chemainus and our parked cars so we can head home. Breakfast included at our Salt Spring Island hotels. - 19km
Cowichan Bay - Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay - This well located property offers comfortable oceanfront accommodation as well as an indoor heated pool, hot tub, his and hers saunas and a fully equipped gym.
Lake Cowichan - Lake Cowichan Lodge - This modest motel property is located at the end of the Trans Canada Trail. It’s close to the lakeside downtown area where you will find interesting shops, restaurants and parks.
Duncan - Ramada Inn Duncan - This full service hotel is located close to the historic downtown area so we will have time to explore Duncan on foot or by bike.
Salt Spring Island - Salt Spring Inn - Historic Inn located in downtown Ganges with an on site restaurant available. Closest location to Saltspring Saturday Market. Seabreeze Inne - This modest property is located a short distance from the heart of Ganges. The spacious grounds feature a heated Guest Gazebo, Hot Tub and patio area with propane BBQ’s and a propane fire pit.
Bicycles - Hybrid bikes or road bikes with wider tires are recommended for those participants doing the route mostly on roads and good rail trails. Because of rougher trail conditions and possible muddy areas on the Trans Canada Trail from Shawnigan Lake to Lake Cowichan we recommend hybrid bikes with shocks for that section. Participants provide their own bikes.
Trip Rating - 2-3 1 - Mostly flat 2 - Flat with some gentle slopes 3 - Rolling, hilly terrain 4 - Some long and/or steep climbs 5 - Extensive climbing. Trip participants should at least have basic cycling skills and be comfortable riding 30 - 40 km. per day. Helmets are required.
